A Cinematic practice built on experience
David Steven Lee is a filmmaker with over twenty years of experience in fashion, commercial, and high-level film production. His work is defined by anticipation, structure, and the ability to remain calm when complexity increases.
Early discipline and focus
David Steven Lee was born in a small town in England, where creativity and athletic ambition shaped his early years.
As a teenager, basketball taught him discipline, teamwork, and resilience. After the path toward professional sport closed, he turned fully to art.
From Fine Art to cinematography
He studied fine art before enrolling in cinematography at Nottingham Trent University.
Early professional experiences included work as an assistant art director on the film Angels & Insects, where he gained first-hand insight into set dynamics, structure, and visual storytelling.
Pressure, precision and the fashion industry
Following graduation, David spent several years travelling and working abroad — crossing the Atlantic on private yachts, working ski seasons in the French Alps, and spending time in Tuscany, where he first developed a deep connection to Italy.
Returning to London, he entered the fashion photography world as an assistant, quickly progressing to work alongside some of the industry’s most respected figures. His ability to remain calm, precise, and acutely observant under pressure led him to assist Nick Knight on major international campaigns and editorial productions during the industry’s pivotal transition from film to digital. During this period,
David contributed to campaigns for houses such as Dior, Fendi, Tom Ford, and Alexander McQueen, as well as high-profile editorial work including magazine covers for Vogue. He worked closely with leading models of the time, including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, and Lily Donaldson, gaining first-hand experience of large-scale productions operating at the highest level.
Return to film
Reconnecting with his original focus on cinematography, David founded his own production company in London.
His work included projects for the London Olympic Legacy Commission, the BBC, and the NHS, alongside independent short films screened internationally.
Italy and a quieter practice
He met Emma while living in a converted artist loft in East London. Their shared values around discipline, clarity, and emotional awareness shaped a long-term creative partnership.
Since relocating to Italy, David has brought decades of technical expertise into a quieter, more human context.
His approach to filming is grounded in restraint and anticipation — observing closely, intervening only when necessary, and maintaining continuity without disrupting the moment. on.
How David works today
At Innocenti Studio, David applies high-level production skills without ego, ensuring that complex days unfold smoothly and that what remains feels coherent, grounded, and true to the people involved.
For David, the most important work often happens before the camera ever starts recording.
